Brinjal/Egg plant/Aubergine is native to the Indian subcontinent, and the Portuguese traded it to Europe (either directly from India or through the Arabs) and cultivated it there. The Europeans started calling it egg-plant because they resembled goose eggs (they may have received the pale yellowish versions).
